Is a Free Hearing Test Really Free? What to Expect

"Free" can make people wary, and a free hearing test is no exception. So here is exactly what a free hearing test at AJC Hearing involves, what it doesn't, and what happens afterwards.

At a glance

  • The hearing test is free of charge, with no fee for the test itself.
  • You're under no obligation to buy anything afterwards.
  • If a hearing aid could help, you can try a demonstration pair for a week before deciding.
  • Treatments such as earwax removal are separate and are priced on their own page.

What the free hearing test includes

Your appointment starts with a look in your ears to check for wax or anything else that could affect the result. Then comes the hearing test itself, which measures how well you hear and how significant any loss is. It is carried out by an HCPC-registered Hearing Aid Dispenser, and afterwards we explain what we found in plain English.

An appointment takes roughly 30 to 90 minutes. The longer end applies if you decide to try hearing aids and we set up a demonstration pair. For a step-by-step account, see what happens during a hearing test.

What it doesn’t include

A free hearing test is only the test. If we find earwax blocking your ear canal, removing it is a separate treatment, and our earwax removal prices are on that page. If you decide you want hearing aids, those are priced separately, and we’ll explain the options before you commit to anything.

Is there any obligation?

No. You can have the test, have your results explained and leave. Some people find their hearing is fine and simply want to know when to check again. Others find a loss that is worth acting on and take their time deciding. Either way, the decision is yours.

The free trial

If a hearing aid could help, you can take home a demonstration pair for a week, a bit like a test drive. It’s the best way to find out how aids feel in your own home and in the places where you struggle most, before spending anything. You can read more about the free hearing aid trial and the styles of hearing aids we fit.

Why we do it this way

We’re an independent clinic in Stockport and have been since 2008, which means we aren’t tied to a single manufacturer. The aim of a free test is simple: you should be able to find out where you stand without it costing you anything or putting you under pressure.

How to book

Appointments are by appointment only, and same-day appointments are available. You can book online or call the clinic. Not sure what to expect on the day? It’s painless: a chat about your hearing, a look in your ears, then the test itself. You can book a hearing test at our Stockport clinic.
