We use microsuction: gentle suction under magnification, with nothing flushed into the ear. The audiologist can see exactly what they’re doing throughout, which is why it’s suitable for most people — including hearing aid users and anyone with a perforated ear drum who can’t have traditional syringing or irrigation. Microsuction is a safer method than syringing. It is suitable for most people, whereas syringing is not suitable for perforated ears or ear drums that have been operated on.
If you have never had wax removed, or it has been a long time since it was done, olive oil eardrops for three or four days beforehand can help loosen the wax. They will not usually clear the ear on their own, but they make the wax easier to remove.
